Play Ball!

Date: Saturday, July 17, 2021

Place: BayCare Ballpark

          Clearwater, FL

A great turnout and great fun was had as the Island Estates Yacht Club (IEYC) invaded BayCare Ballpark, and watched the Clearwater Threshers and Dunedin Blue Jays play, thanks to the weather which resulted in a 2.5 hour rain delay, just one inning of baseball.  Fortunately, a full evening of activities were planned and enjoyed by all despite the delay, a power outage, and no air conditioning.

Bunni & Scott Lefebvre and Marsha & Eric Jones were our hosts for the evening. In attendance were 33 members and 13 guests. Eric & Scott met everyone and distributed tickets at the Ballpark’s Diamond Club & Suite entrance. Upon entering the Thresher’s Club Marsha & Bunni greeted everyone and handed out goodie bags. A full buffet of hotdogs, meatballs, chicken tenders, macaroni & cheese and salad was available along with a refrigerator stocked with water and sodas.

As luck would have it, IEYC was in the climate-controlled Thresher’s Club as the rain began to fall.  The grounds crew rolled out the covering for the baseball diamond club members continued to catch up. Not only did the baseball bingo card not include a “rain delay” box, it also did not include a “power outage” box which would have been called at about a quarter past seven when the ballpark suites lost power. Though quickly restored, it also disabled the air-conditioning in the Threshers Club.

With the thunder, lightning, and heavy rains showing no signs of letting up, the hosts made the decision to move forward with raffle drawings.  Finally, it appeared that the rain was coming to an end and the baseball game would continue so the raffle drawings were paused.  However, a short time later with the repair of the air-conditioning in the room being suspect, baseball bingo was formally cancelled and the raffle drawings resumed.

A big thank you to all the Butterflies and other committee members that helped make this a success. An additional thank you to Mary Reinhardt for doing an amazing job taking care of the reservations and name tags.

Thanks again to all who helped and/or participated. It was a lot of fun. We hope to see everyone again at the Wine Tasting event at Wine Society in Tarpon Springs on Saturday, August 21.
